| Singapore Reinforces ban on Chewing Gum Imports |

SINGAPORE (AP) - Concerned that its 1992 ban on chewing gum might be subverted by citizens ordering from foreign mail order catalogs, the government stressed that ordering gum is punishable by up to a year in jail.
In a letter published today in the newspaper Straits Times, customs spokeswoman Chew Lai Leng took issue with an article about the growing popularity of overseas mail order catalogs. The article said chewing gum could not be imported "unless it is for personal consumption."
"The importation into Singapore of any chewing gum is prohibited," wrote Ms. Chew.
People convicted of trying to import gum face a year in jail and fines of up to $6,173. However, mere possession of gum is not an offence, and tourists are allowed to bring in a few sticks.
Singapore imposed the ban in 1992 to keep its subway running on time after spent wads of gum, disposed of on train doors, prevented them from closing and disrupted service.
