How to Download YouTube Videos and Watch Offline


Watching YouTube videos is all well and good as long as you have a stable internet connection, but there may be times when you don’t have a high-speed internet connection – on vacation, traveling, commuting to work. To prepare for these situations, you may want to download YouTube videos in advance to watch offline.

We will walk you through the officially approved flawless method which is to sign up for a YouTube Premium subscription. There are more shady alternatives to download YouTube videos that you can find with a quick web search, but use them at your own risk.

At the time of writing, YouTube Premium costs $14.99 per month. Aside from being able to download videos to your devices, a subscription means you’ll never see ads on YouTube. In addition, everything is included in YouTube Music Premium, which costs $11.99 per month separately.

How to Download YouTube Videos to Desktop

If you’re signed in to YouTube with a premium account, you’ll see a Download Button below videos while you watch them: click it and the download will start. When browsing video thumbnails in a grid (e.g. on the YouTube homepage), you can click the three dots next to a video to find the download option.

A small download status box will appear in the lower left corner and you will need to keep the current browser tab open until the download is complete. Downloads aren’t synced between devices – they’re local to the device you’re on – and they’re not automatically deleted unless the device goes offline for 30 days.

To find your downloads on YouTube on the web, click the Downloads button in the navigation pane on the left. Everything you see on this page can be viewed without an internet connection if required. click Download settings (top right) to change the default video quality of your downloads to a maximum of 1080p HD.

On the same screen you will see a Delete all downloads Button that deletes all clips you have stored on the current device. To remove an individual download, click the three dots next to a clip on the downloads page and select it Remove from downloadsor go to the video page and click downloaded then Extinguish on the following dialog box.

Note that the required caching technology means that this only works in Google Chrome and browsers based on the same Chromium base, such as e.g. Microsoft Edge. If you use Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari, you need to switch to another browser to download YouTube videos.

You can also download YouTube videos in the Android and iOS mobile apps. You can tap Download Button that appears under Videos while you’re watching them, or you can tap the three dots next to a video while browsing and then select download video Possibility.

If this is your first time doing this, you will be prompted to select a video quality setting up to 1080p HD. If you want the YouTube app to keep using the same setting in the future, enable that Remember my settings otherwise, you will be prompted to choose a download video quality each time you save a clip.

You will find the video download quality option and various other settings – e.g. B. whether to limit downloads to times when your device is connected to Wi-Fi – by then tapping your profile picture (top right of the front screen). settings and Background and downloads. There is also a recommend downloads Toggle switch: Turn this on and YouTube will recommend videos you may want to save based on your viewing activity.

To find your recommended videos and videos you’ve downloaded to your device, tap library then Downloads from the front screen of the app. Again, you’ll need to connect to the internet at least every 30 days for downloads to persist, just so YouTube knows you’re still a premium subscriber.

Tap the three dots next to a downloaded video to find the option to remove it from your device. You can access the option to delete all downloaded videos — along with a breakdown of how much space they’re currently taking up on your phone or tablet — by going to the download settings screen mentioned above.
