A DIY VAT has doubled the value of his home by installing his own swimming pool in the back garden.
Alex Dodman, 36, used YouTube tutorials to help him build the pool at his Essex home.
Despite the £10,000 price tag, Alex says it was worth doing the job yourself as a professional installation could cost £12,000.
Explaining that the pool was a dream project, Saffron Walden’s ambulance worker said, “I had dreamed of having a pool after the house renovation and I even had a small patch in mind to hopefully build one someday.”
However, the decision to embark on the massive DIY job was short-lived: “I was watching a video on YouTube during my lunch break of someone building a pool, and the same day I rented a mini excavator over the phone.”
“I started building and digging the hole in January 2020, but then Covid struck and couldn’t get any material for ages.”
Alex described the pandemic hiatus as “a little blessing” as it meant he “started buying things [he] needed by Facebook Marketplace, which was much cheaper.”
The father of two has previously achieved some notoriety for his large scale home improvement projects and the value they add to his home.
He previously saved £75,000 by installing a gym and home cinema himself.
The project was hard work for a lone worker as Alex had to move six tons of substructure and add artificial grass around the pool and dig up and uproot bushes by hand.
The whole process took over a year.
DIY crazy Alex said, “I document a lot of my DIY jobs around the house, from the kitchen to the home office, the outdoor gym, the pizza oven to building the pergola.”
The pool construction is the subject of an ongoing series on his TikTok channel, currently in 36 parts.
