YouTube wants everyone to know if you just post your shorts on TikTok or Instagram Reels. In an update on their community help center, a member of the YouTube team has announced that the site has started adding watermarks to shorts downloaded from its studio creator portal. YouTube will begin watermarking shorts you create on desktop in the coming weeks, before rolling out to mobile over the next few months.
After TikTok’s popularity exploded, other internet companies realized that short videos had won over the younger generation and quickly created new products to compete with the platform. However, if you spend time-wasting videos across multiple apps and websites, it’s easy to see that creators tend to repost the same videos across multiple services — many Instagram Reels, for example, are also TikTok videos.
Google’s own website said it watermarks shorts so “viewers can see the content [the user is] Cross-platform sharing can be found on YouTube Shorts.” It sounds like one would hope that the new feature could raise awareness that it also hosts short videos, and get you trying them out and beating their competitors use.
YouTube first launched its short-form video format in India in 2020 before releasing it to 100 countries last year. A few months later, $100 million was set aside to start paying shorts creators. According to YouTube, by June of this year, Shorts already has 1.5 billion active, logged-in monthly users, which is much more than the 1 billion monthly active users that TikTok had reached in September 2021.
